Through the years Al Gilbert has conducted fieldwork across the globe—from Africa to Australia—to observe and sketch rare and colorful tropical birds in their native habitat. His work has been featured by the National Audubon Society, among others, and in 1977 Al’s painting of a Hooded Merganser won the 45th Federal Duck Stamp Contest.
